Women and men have chemicals in their bodies known as hormones, which are necessary for many processes in the body. Age and certain issues may cause these chemicals to deplete. The reduced levels cause a wide array of issues that affect everything from the person's sexual health to sleep habits.
Sex hormones are basically the substances that make a man a man and a woman a woman. Women produce two hormones, progesterone, and estrogen, that play a role in their menstrual cycle, ovulation and pregnancy. The main hormone in men is testosterone, which controls the depth of their voice, the hair on their bodies and their ability to have and maintain an erection. It also plays a role in their ability to reproduce because it impacts the sperm.
Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone all decrease as a person ages, especially in women. Women go through a process called menopause, where they no longer produce the hormones necessary to conceive and maintain a healthy pregnancy. A tumor or certain endocrinological deficiencies cause a decrease in estrogen. The decrease in estrogen causes symptoms like hot flashes, migraines, sleep issues, fatigue and vaginal dryness. A woman's sex drive may decrease as well. Men who have a decrease in testosterone may experience problems getting and maintaining an erection, hair loss, a decrease in muscle mass and an increase in body fat.
Hormone replacement therapy consists of a medical practitioner administering a natural hormone orally, transdermally or via an injection. The hormone rebalances the hormones within the body, which reduces, or even eliminates, the prevalence of symptoms like erectile dysfunction, weight gain, sleep issues and hot flashes. The estrogen, progesterone and testosterone replacement reduces the patient's risk of osteoporosis as well as breast, endometrial and colorectal cancer.
